MD2X vs Pandoc vs Typora: Choosing a Markdown Workflow Tool
Pandoc, Typora and MD2X all touch Markdown, but they sit on completely different points of the workflow. Pandoc is a universal document converter, Typora is a writing/reading editor, and MD2X is a narrow publishing tool aimed at X. This comparison reflects each project's own site as of 2026-10-23.
What each tool is built for
Pandoc (pandoc.org) describes itself as a universal document converter — a "swiss-army knife" that converts Markdown and many other formats into HTML, EPUB, docx, LaTeX, PDF, PowerPoint, MediaWiki and more. It is a command-line program and Haskell library, free software under the GPL, aimed at batch and document-publishing pipelines.
Typora (typora.io) is a minimal, WYSIWYG Markdown editor and reader for desktop. It removes the split source/preview view, renders tables, math, Mermaid and diagrams as you type, and exports to PDF, docx, OpenOffice, LaTeX, MediaWiki and Epub. It is a writing environment, not a conversion service.
MD2X (/editor) is a browser tool that turns Markdown into clipboard-ready rich text for X Articles, renders code/Mermaid/table blocks as PNG images, and splits long drafts into threads. It has no file-format pipeline and no editor chrome of its own beyond the editing surface.
Selection table
| Dimension | Pandoc | Typora | MD2X |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kind of tool | CLI / library converter | Desktop WYSIWYG editor | Browser publishing tool |
| Strength | Huge format matrix, citations, PDFs, batch jobs | Write and read Markdown with live preview | Clipboard-ready X Articles + thread output |
| Output | Files (docx, epub, PDF, slides, wiki, ...) | Edited Markdown file; exports to PDF/docx/... | Rich text on the clipboard + PNG assets |
| Code / diagrams | Converts syntax; relies on target renderer | Highlights ~100 languages; renders Mermaid | Code, Mermaid and tables become pasteable PNG |
| Install / access | Install on your machine; command line | Desktop app for macOS/Windows/Linux | Open in the browser, no sign-up |
When to choose each
- Pandoc when you are producing documents for many standard destinations (ebooks, Word, slides, academic PDFs) or scripting conversions.
- Typora when you want a calm, distraction-free place to write and read Markdown on the desktop, with diagrams and math rendered natively.
- MD2X when the specific destination is X Articles or an X thread and you need rich text plus code/diagram/table images already prepared for that editor.
Where each is not the right fit
- Pandoc does not produce X-shaped clipboard rich text, and it is not an editor.
- Typora is a writing environment; it does not prepare numbered thread posts or pasteable X Articles assets.
- MD2X is not a general document converter: it won't export your draft to docx, EPUB or PDF, and it renders assets to PNG rather than SVG.
Boundaries
Pandoc and Typora are mature, general-purpose Markdown tools; MD2X is intentionally narrow. MD2X runs in your browser and keeps drafts local; its optional AI features (polish, translation, smart splitting, AI cover art) require your own OpenAI-compatible API key and it does not host inference. This article avoids quoting prices or tiers — check Pandoc's site (free/GPL) and Typora's purchase page for current terms.
