MD2X vs Carbon: Which Code-Image Tool Should You Use in 2026?
Carbon popularized the "pretty code screenshot" category, and MD2X overlaps it on purpose: both render a snippet into a themed PNG. But they are built around different workflows. This comparison is grounded in each tool's own documentation as of 2026-10-23.
What each tool actually is
Carbon (carbon.vercel.app, open source at github.com/carbon-app/carbon) is a browser tool dedicated to creating and sharing beautiful images of source code. You paste a snippet, drop a file, or load a GitHub gist, then customize the syntax theme, background, window theme, padding, shadows and fonts. It exports PNG and SVG, lets you copy the image to the clipboard, and can save/share snippets (an account is required to save snippets).
MD2X (/code-to-image) renders code blocks to syntax-highlighted PNG as one step inside a larger job: converting a whole Markdown draft into X Articles rich text. It also turns Mermaid diagrams and Markdown tables into images, previews the article, and splits long posts into threads.
Selection table
| Dimension | Carbon | MD2X |
|---|---|---|
| Primary job | One beautiful standalone code image to share or embed | Convert a whole Markdown post into X Articles rich text |
| Input | Paste code, drop a file, or load a GitHub gist URL | A Markdown document with fenced code blocks |
| Export formats | PNG and SVG | PNG images only |
| Account to use | Not required to export; required to save snippets | Not required at all |
| Extra output | Shareable snippet links, iframe embeds, Tweet button | Clipboard-ready rich text, Mermaid/table images, thread splitting |
| Runs in the browser | Yes, installable as a PWA for offline use | Yes, drafts stay on your device |
When to choose Carbon
- You want a single, highly polished snippet image for social media, slides, or a blog, and you care about background color, window chrome, padding and shadow.
- You want a shareable snippet link or an iframe embed you can drop into your own site.
- You value editor integrations and a CLI for opening selections directly.
When to choose MD2X
- You are publishing a long-form Markdown draft to X Articles and need headings, links and lists preserved as rich text, with every code block, diagram and table converted along the way.
- You don't want to context-switch between a converter and a separate image tool for each snippet.
- You also need to split the same draft into a numbered thread.
Where each is not the right fit
- Carbon does not turn a multi-section Markdown document into pasteable rich text; it produces one image at a time.
- MD2X is not a snippet-hosting service: it has no save/share-by-account or iframe embeds, and it exports PNG rather than SVG.
Boundaries
Both tools run in the browser and keep your code local. MD2X's code images are sized to paste cleanly into X Articles; Carbon's images are designed to be shared as standalone artifacts. Optional AI features in MD2X (polish, translation, smart thread splits, AI cover art) require your own OpenAI-compatible API key — MD2X does not host model inference.
